This new feature in development will let users share the song currently listened to on Spotify directly within the Instagram app. Still, these platforms, such as Apple Music and Spotify, currently allow the sharing of music that you are listening to through posts and stories on the platform. But this new option takes it a step further by syncing up your Spotify listening with your Instagram account in real-time.

How this works is that users will connect their Instagram to their Spotify profile. Then, every time one starts playing a track on Spotify, it will automatically post as a note visible to others on the user’s profile and in messages. It gives followers a real-time look at what kind of music that particular person enjoys. The notes remain there until such time when the user stops sharing or changes the song that is playing.

This was discovered by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi in Instagram’s code. Messages in the app confirm that users can choose to always broadcast their current musical choice, or turn it off at any time. Of course, users already can share music in notes on the app, but for now it requires a manual update each time a song changes. With Spotify integration, it happens automatically in the flow of listening.

Being able to see what tunes friends are grooving to-as it happens-seems like a neat modern spin. For launch, only Spotify users may participate, but hopefully other streamers get on board, too, down the line.
