Katy Perry has been tapped to electrify the crowd at this year’s AFL Grand Final. In what is sure to be a showstopper, Perry will take center stage at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on the sport’s biggest day.
Word first started circulating a few weeks back that a major international artist had been locked in for the pre-game and halftime performances. On July 25th, the AFL made it official, unveiling Perry as the headline talent in a slick promotional video. “100,000 passionate fans roaring at the mighty MCG, I can’t wait to hear that.”
For Perry, it will mark a return to Melbourne’s sporting showpiece having previously ignited the crowd before the 2020 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup final, just prior to worldwide lockdowns. While rules and terminology of Aussie Rules may be new to her, there’s no doubt Perry will have nine other performances worth of stage expertise to draw from as she owns the hallowed turf.
The Grand Final is scheduled for September 28th, with Perry’s appearance serving as her biggest live show since 2020. It comes at a momentous time for the pop chameleon as well, with new music having recently surfaced and her highly anticipated seventh studio album “KP7” on the horizon for September 20th.
