Social media platform TikTok recently unveiled the most popular musicians and tracks that resonated with users over the past year. Following similar year-end reports from other streaming services, TikTok’s findings give insight into how music discovery and trends spread on the short-form video app in 2023.

According to the data, TikTok exposure significantly contributed to real-world chart success. Over 85% of the United Kingdom’s No. 1 singles and nearly all top Billboard Hot 100 songs in the U.S. benefited from viral moments on the platform.

Lewis Capaldi, Sam Smith, and Central Cee were standouts in the UK popularity rankings. Capaldi took the top spot as the overall most viewed artist, with others like Anne Marie and Ed Sheeran also in the top five. Drill track “Sprinter” by Central Cee and Dave emerged victorious as 2023’s most engaged-with song among British users.

Additional trending tracks globally included remixes of Justin Skye’s “Collide” and FIFTY FIFTY’s “Cupid”. Sped-up tempo versions of songs consistently resonated best on the short video app. Executives note that faster pacing helps showcase lyrics and keep viewer attention for TikTok’s format. Popular creators often debut these remixes, sparking official releases from record labels capitalizing on the newfound attention.

Across genres, hip-hop, and pop dominated the Billboard TikTok chart during its inaugural months. Taylor Swift featured prominently thanks to trending older hits receiving renewed discovery. Emerging talent like Mae Stephens also made a splash as an international breakthrough act.

TikTok’s “Year on TikTok” report gave valuable insight into how the platform shapes the music business, with sped-up remixes and viral moments consistently driving traditional streaming and sales success over the past year.
