It was a bitter defeat in more ways than one last Saturday night in Saudi Arabia. Not only did Tyson Fury suffer the first loss of his career, relinquishing his heavyweight title to Oleksandr Usyk in a split decision, but rap superstar Drake was also left nursing major losses after betting big on the Gypsy King.
According to social media posts, Drake had wagered a staggering $565,000 on Fury to emerge victorious. But in a twist of fate, the judges saw it differently, crowning Usyk as the first undisputed champion in over two decades. When the final bell rang, Drake’s potential $1 million payday went up in smoke.
It was just the latest installment in an unfortunate streak of bad beats for the music mogul. Earlier this year, he watched helplessly as $400,000 bet on Jake Paul to KO Tommy Fury went for naught when Fury won on points. And in 2022, two massive seven-figure bets – one on Israel Adesanya and another on Argentina in the World Cup – also ended in bankruptcy.
Drake’s partnership with online sportsbook Stake seems to have only fueled his gambling habit. Whenever a big fight or game is on the docket, he is sure to flash his betting slips on Instagram, ads for Stake splashed all over. The two even formalized a promotional deal where Drake became a spokesman of sorts for the platform.
While his enormous wagers provide a thrill for fans, they have proven time and again to be financially self-destructive. At this rate, Drake may need to call it quits before his luck, and bank account runs completely dry.
