Demi Lovato has opened up about how she wants to do things differently for her children than what she experienced growing up in Hollywood. The 31-year-old reflected on her childhood stardom and shared that she would set down some guidelines if her kids wanted to pursue careers in the entertainment industry.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lovato said that if her children were interested in music, she would tell them, “Let’s study music theory and prepare you for the day you turn 18, because it’s not happening before that.” She wants to be able to protect their childhood in a way she feels she missed out on. Lovato also believes in having a Plan B, which she herself wishes she had.

Lovato grew up in the public eye, thanks to her Disney Channel fame, which she’ll talk about in a documentary, “Child Star,” in which she interviews other former celebrity child actors. In addition to some reflection about her childhood, Lovato—who recently got engaged to Jordan Lutes—has been very open about wanting a family for herself someday.

Meanwhile, Lovato and Lutes recently expanded their family by adopting a dog named Pickle. Lovato posted adorable pictures of Pickle on Instagram, to which Lutes responded with heart emojis, referring to the new furry member of their “family.” It’s pretty obvious how much Lovato is excited about the future chapters in her life—marriage and parenthood—but she definitely would want to give her children an experience quite unlike her own in the Hollywood spotlight from a tender age.
