Billie Eilish recently found herself surprised by the reaction to some candid comments she made in a Variety interview. Though she hadn’t intended it as such, many interpreted her words as publicly coming out for the first time.

“I didn’t, but I kinda thought, wasn’t it obvious?” Billie remarked on the red carpet at the Variety Hitmakers event, where she was being honored alongside her brother and collaborator Finneas. “I didn’t realize people didn’t know.

In the original Variety profile, Billie had mentioned loving women both emotionally and physically. Yet she said she also feels intimidated by their beauty. Despite this, all of Billie’s known relationships up until now have been with men.

Reflecting on the discussion around her “coming out,” Billie said “I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”

Though a bit nervous talking about this personal side of herself publicly, Billie remains steadfast. As she confirmed with her signature candid charm, “I am for the girls,” Fans can next see Billie doing what she does best on Saturday Night Live next month. It’s clear she won’t be limited by anyone’s expectations of who she should or shouldn’t be.
