Charli XCX is never one to hold back, and in a recent interview she opened up more than ever about her colorful relationship with longtime collaborator and friend, Matty Healy of The 1975.
While chatting with Apple Music 1 about her highly anticipated remix album “Brat”, set for release this Friday, Charli got candid about how Healy has become like family over the years. Matty “is like a brother to me now,” she shared with host Zane Lowe.
But as anyone with siblings knows, close family bonds don’t come without their share of squabbles. Charli laughed as she admitted, “I have an endless amount of respect for him as a songwriter and him as a person. But I sometimes want to strangle him.”
Her playful frustration stems in part from Healy and The 1975’s prominent role on the remix project. The band revamps Charli’s song “I Might Say Something Stupid”, and according to Lowe, their contributions take the track to unexpected new heights.
Beyond this collaboration, Charli’s relationship with Healy and The 1975 runs deep. Not only is she engaged to the band’s drummer George Daniel, but she’s long admired the band: “I just really enjoy people who take a risk in terms of what they’re putting out there artistically.”
It’s this mutual respect that lays the foundation for their brother-sister dynamic. While sparks may fly between these two outspoken artists, their bond is one built to last in music and beyond.
