Charlie Puth seems to be taking inspiration from a recent shout-out by pop superstar Taylor Swift. Puth announced that he will be releasing a new single called “Hero” in late May, just days after Swift name-dropped him on her latest album.

In a video posted to TikTok, Puth shared that he had written “Hero” about a friend but had hesitated to release it because he sometimes gets nervous being too personally open in his songs. However, Swift’s unexpected mention of him on her record-breaking new album The Tortured Poets Department was the “sign” he needed to share the track.

On the album’s title track, Swift sings “we declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.” Though cryptic, fans believed this was a reference to Swift’s reported brief relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy.

Puth first reacted to the name-drop on social media, reposting one of Swift’s photos celebrating the album’s commercial success. Now, it seems the shout-out from one of music’s biggest stars has inspired Puth to put out new music of his own. He declared that “Hero” will be released worldwide on May 24th as the lead single for his upcoming album.
