The 2024 Grammy Awards celebrated many deserving artists while also producing some unexpected moments. Miley Cyrus earned her first Grammy wins, taking home Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit “Flowers.”
Taylor Swift continued her dominance at the Grammys, winning her fourth Album of the Year trophy for “Midnights.” This cemented her place in Grammy history as the artist with the most AOTY wins. However, her acceptance speech was met with raised eyebrows as she announced her new album rather than solely celebrating her win. Some also questioned her seeming disregard for presenter Celine Dion.
Song of the Year went to “What was I Made For” by Billie Eilish, featured on the soundtrack for “Barbie.” Breakout artist Victoria Monet scored a well-deserved Best New Artist victory over Noah Kahan, Coco Jones and Ice Spice.
The indie rock band Boygenius added three more Grammys to their mantle, winning awards for Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance and Best Alternative Music Album for their work on “Not Strong Enough” and “The Record.”
SZA captivated with a hat trick of wins for Best Progressive R&B Album (“SOS”), Best R&B Song (“Snooze”), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Ghost in the Machine” with Phoebe Bridgers).
Laufey earned her first Grammy in Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category, capping a memorable career. Peso Pluma took home his inaugural trophy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album with “Genesis.” Tyla continued her rise with a win for Best Global Music Performance for “Water.”
Joni Mitchell, a legend in her own right, nabbed Best Folk Album for “Joni Mitchell at Newport.” Dr. Dre was honored with the Global Impact Award, presented by Jay-Z who then made waves with a speech addressing Beyonce’s zero AOTY wins and lack of Black artist recognition.
In a rare public performance, Tracy Chapman beautifully joined Luke Combs on stage to perform her timeless “Fast Car.” Standout memorial performances paid tribute to icons Tina Turner, Sinead O’Connor, and Tony Bennet. U2 debuted their Las Vegas residency song “Atomic City” via satellite, though some felt the performance fell flat.
