MTV is shifting the date of its Video Music Awards ceremony this year to Wednesday, September 11th, from Tuesday, September 10th, as it was previously announced. The move is to avoid a broadcast conflict with a major potential cable news event. On the date proposed, a presidential debate between incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris and former Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump was scheduled.

Programming the prestigious award show opposite such a big political broadcast created a dilemma for MTV. One of its missions is to increase civic participation, which makes same-day programming quite a mismatched pair. Secondly, high viewer interest in this historic face-off has overshadowed music’s marquee night.

Set to grace the VMAs stage are Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro. That is a return to the main stage for Cabello and includes first-time performances from the remaining four. Carpenter sang during the pre-show last year but has since risen in rank to secure a coveted spot this time around. All five acts are also in the running this year.

The ceremony is going to air live from New York’s UBS Arena on September 11th. MTV has appropriate remembrances slated for the 23rd anniversary of the attacks. Recent programs saw a spike in Latin representation, a trend likely to continue.

Top nominees include Taylor Swift, who was mentioned 10 times, and Post Malone, who was mentioned 9. Voting stays open online through the end of August. The rescheduled 2024 VMAs are promising more star-studded talent and recognition for top artists.
