Former One Direction member Zayn Malik opened up in a recent interview about using his quick reflexes to save bandmate Harry Styles from a dangerous situation involving pyrotechnics during a concert years ago.

Speaking on the hot sauce-flavored interview series “Hot Ones”, Malik recalled an incident from a 2013 show where things got too heated on stage. While Malik noted he had never been burned himself from the flames used in their performances, he told hosts about a close call Styles had during one particular number.

As Malik described it, Styles was wiping sweat from his face with a towel just as some fireworks were ready to launch in the surrounding area. Unfortunately, Styles was unaware of their proximity due to having the towel over his head. Thinking fast, Malik sprang into action from across the stage, shoving Styles out of harm’s way only moments before the pyrotechnics went off. “So, you see me run from one side of the stage and just push him out of the way, and the pyro kind of like explodes in front of his face” Malik said. “That was really dangerous.”

While the other band members Niall Horan and Liam Payne seemed focused on performing, Louis Tomlinson was the only one who glanced over and noticed the emergency unfolding. Malik played it cool but was glad no one was burned thanks to his lightning quick reflexes.

Elsewhere in the interview, Malik got candid about some of the technical snafus One Direction encountered during their early shows, like power outages cutting off their microphone feed. Ever the entertainers, they’d launch into a cappella version of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme to keep the energy going with the crowd.
