Apple Music introduces a new way to explore music with Discovery Station. The popular streaming service now offers an unannounced station aimed at surfacing songs a user might enjoy based on their past listening habits.
Dubbed Discovery Station, the option appears beneath existing recommendation selections in the “Listen Now” section of the Apple Music app on mobile, desktop, and web. It analyzes a subscriber’s library and playback history to curate a selection of tracks they are unfamiliar with but likely to appreciate.
Early user feedback suggests Discovery Station delivers appropriately. Testers found many recommendations were perfectly aligned with their personal tastes, despite not previously hearing the songs. Where Spotify is known for its personalized weekly Discover Weekly playlist, this new station looks to give Apple Music subscribers a similar experience of exploring fresh music catered to their preferences.
Unlike stations tied to one’s existing library, Discovery Station aims to expose subscribers to new artists and genres based on what they regularly play. Only time will tell if it proves as effective as Spotify’s version at introducing users to new music they want to hear again. But the option is a step forward in Apple’s goal of customized musical discovery through algorithmic matching of tastes.
