SZA opened up about the unexpected inspiration behind her popular song “Drew Barrymore” during a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, sharing an intimate story of representation and personal growth.
The Grammy-winning artist explained that the song, which appears on her 2017 debut album Ctrl, was more than just a track title. For SZA, Drew Barrymore represented a rare example of authenticity during her younger years.
“When you’re younger, and you’re a Black woman, there aren’t always a lot of examples,” SZA told Barrymore. She highlighted how the actress’s unfiltered, genuine approach to Hollywood resonated with her, particularly her imperfect smile and unique personality.
SZA described feeling a connection to Barrymore’s on-screen presence, noting how the actress’s comfort with herself gave her “permission to be myself.” She admitted she had even written a letter to Barrymore that was never sent, expressing her admiration.
The moment came full circle when Barrymore had previously appeared in the song’s 2017 music video, walking past SZA with a supportive smile – a gesture SZA still finds remarkable.
