It seems Spotify continues to explore new ways of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into the music streaming experience. Sources have uncovered evidence the company may be developing AI-powered playlist generation directly from user prompts.

Cybersecurity researcher Chris Messina came across code within the Spotify mobile app mentioning “AI playlists” and playlists created “based on your prompts”. This implies users could soon describe the type of playlist they want, and an AI model would automatically build one matching that description.

Messina proposed such a feature may be added to the existing “Blend” option, where two or more individuals’ music tastes are combined into a shared playlist. When TechCrunch asked Spotify about these plans, the company remained opaque but acknowledged regularly brainstorming new concepts.

If prototyping is underway, it shows Spotify’s commitment to tailoring the platform around listener preferences. The app has long focused on personalization by learning habits over time. An AI component providing song selections straight from natural language prompts would potentially take personalization to new heights.

While not all in-development features materialize, clues in Spotify’s application code offer insight into potential directions. Marrying AI playlist generation with the app’s customization strengths aligns with Spotify’s user-first mission and could further augment the streaming experience for many subscribers. Only time will tell if this concept progresses from concept to consumer product.
