Spotify users have been able to upload custom images for playlists for some time, but a new feature takes creator tools to the next level. The music streaming platform has integrated photo editing capabilities directly into the app, allowing users to quickly and easily design eye-catching cover art for playlists.

The new visual creation features give Spotify users the ability to upload photos and then apply filters, text overlays, and stickers directly from within the app. These design elements have been tailored specifically for music in mind. The goal is to empower creators to produce attractive, on-brand visuals that will stand out and engage audiences on social media.

This expansion of DIY design options further blurs the line between curated professionals and passionate fan creators. By providing simple tools to make polished-looking covers, Spotify aims to level the playing field. It allows playlist providers to more easily compete for attention alongside major label albums and artists. The crates we lovingly cultivate can now have visual flair to match their musical flair.

While these added creative functions expand Spotify’s feature set, the company has avoided building out full-fledged social networking. It has slowly incorporated many familiar aspects of social apps – photos, following, notifications, ads – without becoming a platform primarily about public profiles and feeds.
