Billie Eilish has built a career on intimate, candid songs with her fans. But in a new interview, the 22-year-old singer revealed she’s closing that chapter for good when it comes to discussing her personal relationships and sexuality.
Speaking with Vogue, Eilish opened up about unintentionally coming out as queer last year, where she revealed being physically attracted to women. While some fans celebrated her candor, others accused her of “queerbaiting” for attention.
“I wish no one knew anything about my sexuality or anything about my dating life. Ever, ever, ever. And I hope that they never will again. And I’m never talking about my sexuality ever again. And I’m never talking about who I’m dating ever again.”
The intense online reaction was an eye-opening lesson for the young star. “I guess I underestimated that things I say will be blown up into the biggest news in the world” Eilish revealed. She realized even small remarks would spark global speculation.
That experience, coupled with non-stop rumors surrounding her dating life, has led Eilish to some sobering conclusions. “I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ We’re all little kids growing up and learning ourselves” she explained.
The Grammy winner also grapples with fame’s mental toll, like loneliness while touring the world. Eilish admits to struggling with depression at times. Now signed to a woman-led crew, her Happier Than Ever world tour in 2022 aimed to remedy that.
Despite legions of fans hungering for insider scoops, Eilish’s renewed boundary is a poignant statement on self-preservation. “I want to enjoy the show as well as my days” she mused. At just 22, she’s learning to prioritize emotional well-being over constant validation.
