Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2013 after abruptly ending her tour due to health complications. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that caused joint pain, fatigue, and other symptoms for Gomez. She underwent chemotherapy to treat it. Lupus took a big toll on Selena’s body. In 2017 it led to a serious problem where her kidney stopped working right. Her good friend Francia donated her own healthy kidney to save Selena’s life. They did a surgery to switch the kidneys and it went well. But Selena’s lupus still flares up sometimes which affects her mind.
In addition to her physical journey, Gomez’s mental health has been an ongoing focus. She has experienced depression, anxiety, and panic attacks linked to lupus. This led Gomez to seek treatment at mental health facilities multiple times over the years to manage her conditions.
