There has been no shortage of conspiracy theories spun by Taylor Swift’s loyal fan base over the years. Her cryptic lyrics and social media posts are regularly combed over for hidden meanings and Easter eggs. Now, a new project is fueling speculation that Swift may have contributed more than meets the eye.
Director Matthew Vaughn is gearing up for the release of his new spy thriller film, Argylle. Based on a novel of the same name, the movie follows a gadabout spy and their trusty feline companion. However, Vaughn’s daughter was wholly convinced upon learning some surface-level details that the secret author behind it all was none other than Taylor Swift.
Some coincidences lent credibility to the notion, like Swift’s penchant for argyle sweaters and history of releasing music under pseudonyms. She also owns two Scottish fold cats, the same breed featured in Argylle. Not to mention, Swift Directed her own short film recently and is developing her feature directorial debut. Could writing a spy novel be within her wheelhouse too?
When Vaughn caught wind of the growing internet theory, he was quite amused. He assured that the real author, going by Ellie Conway, was a wholly separate entity. While he understood Swift’s dedicated fans leave no stone unturned, this was not one of her covert projects. Or so he thought.
As it turns out, Swift did play a small role indirectly leading to Argylle after all. Vaughn recounted how his daughters had seen Miss Americana and become enamored with Swift’s Scottish fold, Olivia Benson. They convinced him and his wife, Claudia Schiffer to get one as a Christmas gift. Now, that very cat has a starring role in the film.
While Swift did not pen the source material as some suspected, her influence introduced an important cast member. Argylle may just owe a bit more to the singer than previously assumed. Such is often the case when it comes to peeling back the layers of Taylor Swift’s endless trail of breadcrumbs.
