Ed Sheeran sang the praises of breakthrough artist Olivia Rodrigo during a recent podcast appearance. While chatting with Jake Shane on The Therapuss podcast, Sheeran was asked about Rodrigo’s smash debut single “Drivers License” and had nothing but good things to say.
Sheeran called both of Rodrigo’s 2021 hits, “Drivers License” and her album Sour, “unskippable.” He said the album makes for a cohesive, enjoyable listen from front to back. Sheeran clearly sees big things ahead for the young pop star based on the quality of her early work.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Sheeran waxed poetic about some other perfect debuts over the years. He named Britney Spears’ iconic “Baby One More Time” as potentially the best first song ever released. Sheeran also nodded to Lana Del Rey’s melancholy masterpiece “Video Games” as demonstrating a fully formed artistic vision right out of the gate.
When he’s not praising up-and-comers, Sheeran stays busy with his own music. Last month he treated fans in New York to a 10th anniversary show celebrating his multi-platinum album “+”. Ever the schoolboy at heart, Sheeran also managed to sneak in a surprise set for some lucky kids at a Brighton primary school.
New music may be on the horizon too according to Sheeran, even if the timing is unclear. After stacking two albums in 2021, he’s taking his time crafting what’s next. Fans will be on pins and needles awaiting his return to the studio.
