Drake has filed a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), alleging the company intentionally promoted harmful content that threatened his safety and reputation.

Filed on Monday, the lawsuit centers around Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” which Drake claims goes beyond artistic expression. His legal team at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP argues that UMG strategically used the track to damage his public image and potentially expose him to physical danger.

Drake’s complaint specifically highlights concerns about online harassment and potential safety risks to himself and his family. The lawsuit contends that UMG’s actions were not simply about musical rivalry, but a calculated attempt to manipulate public perception.

Universal Music Group quickly pushed back against the allegations. A company spokesperson stated that the claims are “completely unfounded” and emphasized their long-standing support for Drake’s career.

The legal battle follows a previously withdrawn petition by Drake against UMG and Spotify, which originally accused the companies of artificially boosting Lamar’s track’s streaming numbers.

Key points of Drake’s lawsuit include allegations that UMG:

  • Promoted content designed to damage his reputation
  • Facilitated potentially dangerous public narrative
  • Used corporate resources to amplify harmful messaging

The track “Not Like Us” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, marking a significant moment in the ongoing rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.

Both artists remain signed to Universal Music Group’s labels – Drake to Republic Records and Lamar to Interscope.
