In a surprising move at the 2025 Grammy Awards, rising pop star Chappell Roan used her acceptance speech for Best New Artist to condemn the exploitative practices of the music industry.

After receiving her Grammy, Roan placed the award at her feet and directly addressed music industry leaders, saying, “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” The 26-year-old singer, who was dropped by her record label Atlantic after signing at age 17, spoke passionately about the need for fair wages and healthcare, especially for developing artists.

Roan’s speech was a stark contrast to the typical polished, grateful acceptance speeches. But for her fans, who have propelled her to over 40 million monthly Spotify listeners, the authenticity and defiance was no surprise.

Roan has cultivated an image of uncompromising boldness. She has reprimanded paparazzi, scolded VIP sections, and used her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and reject traditional beauty standards.

However, Roan’s Grammys outburst now puts her in direct conflict with the powerful music industry. As a rising star without the invincibility of top-tier success, Roan’s criticism could jeopardize her continued standing within the industry she relies on.
