At this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony, Annie Lennox gave a poignant performance honoring two iconic artists who passed away recently. Joined by Prince’s collaborators Wendy & Lisa, Lennox soulfully sang Sinéad O’Connor’s legendary hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” during the annual In Memoriam segment.
The stirring rendition was dedicated to both O’Connor and Shane MacGowan of The Pogues, whose faces appeared side by side in a photo tribute before the song began. Lennox poured her heart into channels O’Connor’s one-of-a-kind vocals.
Lennox took a moment to promote Artists for Ceasefire, a coalition of musicians advocating for peace in Palestine. “Artists for ceasefire, peace to the world,” she said, spreading the message amid the somber remembrances. Her use of the Grammy stage to highlight this humanitarian cause showed artistry extends beyond the realm of music.
The performance stood out among other memorials that evening honoring legends like Tony Bennett, Clarence Avant, and Tina Turner. Lennox ensured O’Connor, who passed in July, would not be forgotten or her impact diminished. Much like the trailblazing Irish singer herself, the rendition was stirring, a beautiful musical testament to an unforgettable artist.
