Spotify users across Africa and beyond now have the chance to unlock musical memories from 2023 and craft new ones for the year ahead. The streaming service’s Playlists in Bottles feature allows music lovers to discover the songs that encapsulated last year and bottle up fresh favorites for 2024.

Available in Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, and more, curious customers can visit the dedicated site to claim their 2023 playlist before the January 31st deadline. Answering prompts about relationship status, alter egos, and favorite people through song helps shape a personal time capsule of 12 months of music. Users then get to seal their capsule into virtual objects like bottles, snow globes, or even dumpsters before leaving notes for their future selves.

The process of bottling a new 2024 playlist starts with the same type of song-inspired questions. Picking tunes that kids won’t understand, putting friends onto, or that remind them of favored people helps capture another year in music. Once sealed, playlists can be shared on social media along with the #PlaylistInABottle hashtag.

As Spotify’s MD for Sub-Saharan Africa Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy explains, ““Last year, around this time, we introduced the Playlist in the Bottle, a fun feature that gave Spotify users a chance to capture the songs that resonated with them then at that moment in time and seal it away for one year,”

In other Spotify news, the platform continues tracking Afrobeats’ global rise. Since launching its dedicated online hub in June analyzing the genre’s journey to over 1 billion streams, Spotify has unveiled fresh 2023 data. Insights into the most streamed Afrobeats tracks, albums, and artists supplement existing content exploring the sound’s origins, fusion of styles, and cultural impact. Profiles of influential women also highlight Afrobeats’ evolution on the world stage.

With a user base of over 574 million across 180 markets, including 226 million Premium subscribers, Spotify remains the top audio streaming service. Its treasure trove contains over 100 million songs and five million podcasts for curious customers worldwide to discover.
