It was recently reported that another member of BTS will soon fulfill his mandatory military service requirement. Sources have revealed that Suga, like his bandmate Jin, will enlist in the South Korean military. However, Suga’s service will differ from Jin’s in that he will serve as a social service agent rather than an active duty soldier.
As a social service agent, Suga’s duties will likely involve community work instead of full military training and service. The specifics of when exactly he will begin his service are still unconfirmed. At 29 years old, Suga was granted a deferral last year due to an exemption for notable artists, allowing him to postpone his enlistment until the end of 2023.
All able-bodied South Korean men must dedicate 18 to 21 months to the military between the ages of 18 and 28. When asked to verify the reports about Suga, his agency Big Hit Music declined to provide details, only stating that members will enroll according to individual schedules. It remains unclear why Suga was assigned the alternative social service role typically reserved for those with health issues. Some speculate this non-combat position relates to shoulder surgery he underwent in 2020.
