Shawn Mendes recently opened up about his relationship with former girlfriend Camila Cabello during an interview with life coach Jay Shetty. He discussed how being in the public eye affected their dating experience and their break up and brief reunion last year.
Mendes emphasized that he and Cabello maintain a close bond even after their split. He backed this up with a comment on the social media platform X, in response to a post about the two “not playing about each other.” Mendes simply stated, “no we don’t.”
This comment came after his interview with Shetty, where he talked about successfully preserving the private aspect of their love despite intense public scrutiny. Mendes acknowledged how difficult it can be to not let countless online comments impact you emotionally.
In additional posts on X, Mendes expressed to fans how complex it is to be human and that internet narratives often do not reflect the full reality. When asked to clarify his initial “no we don’t” response, he opened up about feeling annoyed by constant outside speculation in recent months.
Mendes may have been referring to criticism stemming from Sabrina Carpenter’s latest album, which some thought alluded to his past relationships. He valued the opportunity to openly communicate his perspective to fans. While embracing their excitement for his music, Mendes acknowledged his vulnerabilities as a person dealing with online “drama.”
Cabello also opened up recently about her connection with Mendes. Though they had a fun brief reunion in 2023, she said it simply didn’t feel right long term. Both were apparently in a mentally healthy place to gracefully separate instead of forcing things. Cabello continues to hold Mendes in high regard as a “kind, good person.”
