Chappell Roan recently found herself facing backlash over comments taken out of context from a recent interview. In response, she took to TikTok to provide clarification on her stance.
Roan had lamented problems on both sides of the upcoming presidential election and said she didn’t feel pressured to endorse any particular candidate. Some criticized her for not explicitly endorsing the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris over Donald Trump.
In her TikTok video, Roan stated she has always encouraged the use of critical thinking when it comes to voting and politics. She wants people to properly research candidates and issues rather than believe everything at face value. There is nuance to her views that some interviews fail to capture.
Roan reiterated quotes from her full interview in The Guardian. She expressed having issues with both major parties and wanting voters to make informed choices regarding local races as well. Trans rights were named as a key issue where change is needed.
The singer made clear she would never vote for Trump, given his false claims on transgender policies. However, Roan maintained her belief in questioning those in power rather than blindly endorsing anyone. She apologized that some took her words out of context for “clickbait.”
In prior interviews, Roan emphasized that protecting LGBTQ+ civil rights is extremely important. While not explicitly endorsing Harris, her values align with supporting a woman of colour in the presidential race. Roan’s clarification served to eliminate any confusion over where she stands on key election issues.
