It seems Drake’s run at being a sports betting genius has taken yet another hit. The Canadian rapper and diehard Raptors fan lost a sizable $300,000 wager on Tuesday night, as Argentina edged his home country of Canada in Copa América tournament action.
According to an Instagram story post, Drake had placed a monumental $300k bet that Canada was going to be able to pull off the upset over Argentina. “This could get Messi,” he captioned the post, showing his confidence in an unlikely Canada victory.
But it was not to be, as reigning Copa champs Argentina took home a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Messi and Julian Alvarez. Drake’s bet was always something of a long shot, as Argentina comes in favored to win as they look to repeat as tournament champions.
Later, following this loss into the afterlife, the Argentine national team took to social media to get in on the action of playfully trolling Drake and his six-figure losing bet. Across Twitter and Instagram, they posted pictures with Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us” noticeably featured.
Even though Drake grabbed a couple of big wins with some huge payouts not so long ago in recent history, 2024 has been a losing year in the betting game. He lost nearly $2.5 million on failed bets since March, incurring nine-figure losses on both the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup, while even his World Cup bet on Argentina did not come out fully.
