Fans of boundary-pushing Scottish producer Sophie will be gifted with one last studio album this September, nearly two years after her tragic passing. Sophie, out September 24th via labels Future Classic and Transgressive, will be the final collection of new music from the late artist.
Titled simply as her moniker, Sophie worked on the self-titled LP up until her accidental death in January 2021 at only 34 years old. Produced alongside her closest collaborators, the album was nearly finished at the time and has since been lovingly finalized by those closest to her, including brother Ben Long.
Sophie marks the first new music from the innovative artist since 2018’s wildly imaginative debut Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Lead single “Reason Why” featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom dropped this week, giving a taste of Sophie’s signature pop-meets-abstract sonic blend.
In an interview last year, Long opened up about Sophie’s massive stash of unreleased tracks, said to number in the “literally hundreds.” He recalled their plans to alternate between experimental and pop-focused albums over the coming years. Though not promising to unload everything, Long affirmed many songs were near completion based on their work in the studio..
