The Live Music Society recently distributed $710k in funding to 24 small music venues across the country through their Music in Action grant program. Since launching in 2020, the nonprofit has awarded over $3 million total to 155 grassroots venues.
The Music in Action grants support venues taking creative actions to empower their local music scenes and communities. Recipients develop culturally impactful programs that also boost economic sustainability. For example, The Parlor Room in Massachusetts will offer a year of free showcases and workshops centered on LGBTQIA+ artists of color. Their initiative aims to amplify underrepresented voices through performance opportunities and professional development.
Funding can go towards all kinds of projects promoting accessibility and new opportunities. Venues search for ways to engage diverse audiences and introduce local talent to potential fans. Grantees believe this kind of community building enhances the livelihood of their businesses too. Each venue submitted a specific program plan, committing to see it through next year.
A few highlights from the 2024 grantee list include Blues spots in Philadelphia and Texas. Innovative artist collectives in Nashville and San Francisco also earned support. Ohio is well represented with venues in Cleveland Heights, Akron, and Cincinnati receiving grants. Experimental spaces on both coasts and many scenic small town gems make the cut as well.
