Ariana Grande has made it clear that she will not stand for hatred directed at those in her inner circle. In a strongly-worded Instagram story, the pop star pleaded with fans to refrain from sending toxic messages to individuals some believe are featured in her new album, Eternal Sunshine.

While Grande did not specify the exact targets of these harmful communications, she was unequivocal that those participating are counter to her support and intent. “hi i just wanted to say anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what i would ever encourage,” her message explained.

Relationships seem to be a theme throughout Eternal Sunshine, from the bittersweet tones of “bye” to introspective notes struck in “we can’t be friends.” This has led some listeners to speculate songs reference Grande’s divorce from Dalton Gomez finalized last fall after two years of marriage.

Coinciding with this was Grande’s budding romance with her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, as he too ended his relationship around the same time. Since then, visible outings between Grande and Slater suggested a confirmed connection, with her championing his theater performances.

However, this blossoming bond has not been without backlash. Slater’s ex-wife Lily Jay voiced hurt over their new relationship in a media interview, calling Grande “not a girl’s girl” and feeling her family was “collateral damage.”

With Eternal Sunshine unpacking complex emotions of love found and lost, Grande wants loyal fans to remember the overall message is one of care, understanding, and growth, not inflicting injury on others through reckless speculation and accusations over her art.
