It’s been over 5 years since Britney Spears released new solo music. Despite rumors of behind-the-scenes album preparations, the pop star took to social media to pour cold water on the speculation.
They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry
Multiple outlets had reported that hitmakers Charli XCX and Julia Michaels were being tapped to contribute tracks for an imminent Spears record. However, the singer clarified she’s focused on creating casually, without commercial goals.
“When I write I write for fun or I write for other people !!! […] I’m a ghostwriter and I honestly enjoy it that way !!,” she explained. On occasion, those creations find their way to interested recording artists via pseudonym. But putting her own work on streaming services isn’t her aim.
Spears’ last studio LP was 2016’s Glory. In a new memoir, she reflected on the toll her decade-long conservatorship took on her musical passion. Though she collaborated with icon Elton John in 2022, nurturing her personal growth appears the priority for now rather than career ventures.
Fans can still hope her prolific behind-the-scenes pen yields more artist partnerships down the line. But for Britney, making music will stay a nonprofitable pleasure rather than professional commitment – at least for the foreseeable future. With her autonomy restored, the choice is happily hers alone.
