Legendary rapper Kanye West has struggled to find a home for his newest album among major record labels following repeated antisemitism controversies.
West, 45, has reportedly completed recording for his 11th studio effort with collaborator Ty Dolla $ign. However, the projects faces significant challenges in securing a distribution partner.
Over the past year, the outspoken artist has drawn widespread condemnation for remarks widely seen as antisemitic. Most recently, he trademarked a term interpreted as an ethnic slur. The incidents created turmoil even within his personal life, with ex-wife Kim Kardashian publicly distancing herself.
As a result of the backlash, West has had partnerships severed with lucrative brands like Adidas. Now, the music industry’s largest players are reluctant to take on his new music. Multiple rejections have forced West to take a different approach.
Industry insiders say the rapper has been pitching the unfinished album to smaller, independent labels. At least five such companies have expressed interest in a potential deal. One shop in particular, Too Lost Records, may have an inside track since they already hold rights to some of West’s existing music videos.
However, securing an agreement won’t be guaranteed even there. Former collaborators like Universal Music Group have moved to completely cut business ties to West and distance themselves from any association with his public stances. Their vow to reject any forms of prejudice or intolerance reflects the full force of the backlash West now faces. Only time will tell if one of the indie labels is willing to take the risk in hopes of gaining attention from such a notoriously prolific artist, even amid such controversy.
