YouTube Music is singing a new tune recently by rolling out an experimental feature that is music to any lyricist’s ears – the ability to search for songs by simply humming, singing, or playing a snippet of the melody right into the app.
Accessible through a pulsating waveform icon in the search bar, the new “song by sound” function taps into YouTube Music’s immense catalogue of over 100 million certified tunes. Subscribers of the YouTube Music streaming service on Android and iOS can now use their voice as a virtual instrument to conduct musical searches.
A representative from YouTube Music verified the nationwide release in an email to industry insiders. “We hope to expand this innovative option to even more users of YouTube Music soon,” they noted.
This builds on work by Google, YouTube Music’s parent company, who unveiled MusicLM last year, an AI tool that can generate studio-quality tracks based on textual or aural descriptions of desired music.
Select premium members are also testing out a conversational radio format, customized through speaking preferences for different genres, vibes, and fresh releases. Subscribers can literally talk tech into playing just what they want to hear.
These latest tweaks are part of YouTube Music’s ongoing symphony of upgrades. Only a few months ago, experimental AI was deployed to assist users in creating personalized playlist visuals.
Skipping back just under a year shows the rollout of Samples – an endlessly looping stream of song snippets for previewing potential additions to personal libraries. With a flick of their thumb, listeners can save audio or visual tracks they vibe with.
As tuneful rivals like Spotify have been harmonizing by launching full music videos too, YouTube Music is clearly trying some new progressions to stay on top of the charts and outplay the competition.
