Singer Troye Sivan delves into passionate yet complicated sexual encounters in his new single “One of Your Girls” off his recent album Something to Give Each Other. The song examines attractions Sivan experienced with men who identified as straight, a dynamic that added layers of complexity.
To visualize this intricate subject matter, Sivan debuted a steamy music video for the track featuring actor Ross Lynch. In the video, Sivan experiments with drag to transform into a conventionally beautiful woman. He saw this as representing how he sometimes molded himself for the approval of those men despite it undermining his self-worth.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Sivan opened up about the song’s inspiration. He recalled repeatedly finding himself attracting queer-curious males seeking an exploratory “safe space” with him. While some interactions left him feeling fulfilled, others left Sivan empty once the secrecy ended. He aimed to understand what drew him to such situations rather than labeling them as purely good or bad.
Sivan realized his attractions may stem from internalized homophobia surrounding his high school years. “A lot of the boys that song is about, I feel like they probably would’ve bullied me in high school, and now here they are paying me attention” he reflected. This led Sivan to occasionally sacrifice his self-worth for their fleeting attention.
When choosing a costar, Lynch was perfect as his good looks represent common thirst traps. Despite the song’s raw emotions, Sivan enjoyed experimenting with drag looks inspired by pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. He views his drag persona as an extension rather than totally separate character from himself.
Something to Give Each Other premiered exclusively to Sivan’s biggest supporters through Spotify’s GLOW initiative focused on highlighting LGBTQ+ artists all year long. The streaming giant has long championed Sivan and looked to empower the themes of community and human connection in his new album.
