Taylor Swift has shown her support for British artist Charli XCX as the summer season draws to a close. In a recent profile interview with Charli for Vulture magazine, Swift praised the songwriting abilities and musical talents of the 32-year old singer.
Swift shared her admiration for Charli, having been impressed by her early song “Stay Away” from 2011. She described Charli’s melodic styles as “surreal and inventive”, always taking songs in unexpected directions. Swift acknowledged Charli’s consistency over the past decade in continually pushing creative boundaries with her music. The 14-time Grammy winner also commended Charli’s hard work that has led to deserved recognition and success this year with her sixth studio album.
This public endorsement from Swift comes amid speculation of tensions between the two pop stars. Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife” from her recent album contains lyrics that seem directed at Swift regarding her past relationship with The 1975 singer Matty Healy. However, Charli insisted the song explores her own personal insecurities and feelings of anxiety.
Interest in a potential rivalry was also fueled by both Charli and Swift achieving major commercial success on the Billboard charts this year. Nonetheless, Swift has a history of supporting Charli. She invited the British singer to perform on her 1989 world tour in 2015 and later asked Charli to open for her massive Reputation stadium tour in 2018 alongside Camila Cabello.
In expressing her praise for Charli now, Swift seems to want to dispel any rumors of friction between the two acclaimed pop artists. Their interactions highlight a mutual respect for each other’s work in the music industry.
