The 2023 Soul Train Awards showcased the phenomenal talent in R&B and soul music. Leading the pack of winners was multiple Grammy-nominated artist SZA. She took home four awards including Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and Album of the Year for her critically acclaimed project ‘SOS’.
This marked the sixth consecutive year that a solo female artist has won Album of the Year at the Soul Train Awards. Past winners included H.E.R., Lizzo, Summer Walker, Jazmine Sullivan, and Beyoncé. SZA has now won Best R&B/Soul Female Artist twice, having previously received the honor in 2017.
SZA is riding high this awards season with nine Grammy nominations, including nominations for Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album for ‘SOS’. Her hit song ‘Snooze’ from the album also received nods for Best R&B Song and Record of the Year.
Following closely behind SZA was veteran R&B star Usher, who won three awards. This included Best R&B/Soul Male Artist, which he had previously shared the prize for in 2010. He also won for his collaboration ‘Good Good’ with Summer Walker and 21 Savage.
Victoria Monét rounded out the trio of top winners with two awards for her stirring song “On My Mama”, which won Best Dance Performance and Video of the Year.
Elsewhere, rising talent Coco Jones made her mark by winning Best New Artist. Keke Palmer seamlessly hosted the celebratory evening honoring R&B and soul’s finest performers. The awards show spotlighted the genre’s top talent and timeless legacy.
