It’s no secret that Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo share a close bond. While both are massively talented in their own right, they also understand the unique struggles that come with navigating the music industry at a young age. In a recent interview, Billie opened up about how Olivia directly inspired one of her most emotionally raw songs.

When asked about her relationship with Olivia, Billie expressed feeling very protective of her. As one of the earliest major artists to break out as a teen, Billie knows all too well the pressures and unrealistic expectations that come with fame. She could see Olivia was dealing with similar challenges as her career was taking off. This struck a nerve with Billie and influenced the lyrics for “Goldwing” off her acclaimed album Happier Than Ever.

In her words, Olivia’s teenage journey in the spotlight is what she had in mind while writing the song. Billie said Olivia seemed so “little” handling it all, and she just wanted to shield her from any hurt. Their age difference may be small, but Billie saw herself in Olivia and the struggles specific to young women in the industry. She wants all girls to feel supported without worrying what others might say or do to them.

It’s clear their bond runs deep. In previous interviews, Olivia has praised Billie for her confidence and individuality, saying it’s inspiring to have someone like her to look up to. While she may not have known “Goldwing” was partly inspired by her own rise, Olivia clearly felt understood by Billie’s honest, vulnerable album upon its release. Their friendship shows that with empathy and compassion, even the biggest stars can empower each other.
